Two Dutchmen placed on a present at stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia in Hungary, and ultimately it was Briton Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) who took the victory within the 9.2km time trial throughout the Danube.
Among the many late riders on the course, with its twisting path in Budapest with a 1.3km climb to the end, Dutch champion Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) set a blistering tempo of 11:55. However only one rider later, Yates crashed the previous TT World Champion’s aspirations for victory by ending 5 seconds quicker.
It was then as much as the ultimate rider on the course, race chief Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) to discover a technique to take one other win and retain the pink jersey. He completed three seconds behind Yates to maintain the maglia rosa.
Matteo Sobrero (Group BikeExchange-Jayco) and younger 20-year-old Ben Tulett (Ineos Grenadiers) each completed 13 seconds again for fourth and fifth, respectively.
Yates vaulted up second place general, trailing Van der Poel by 11 seconds, whereas Dumoulin is now third at 16 seconds. Wilco Kelderman (Bora-Hansgrohe) was among the many high GC favourites to maneuver to fourth at 24 seconds. The robust efficiency by Yates have made most of the different GC riders cautious, similar to Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and Romain Bardet (DSM) who are actually in 14th and fifteenth, respectively, 35 seconds down on Van der Poel and 24 seconds down on Yates.
